Position: Registrar
Classification: Part-time, Hourly (20 hours per week)
Location: Catawba County Museum of History
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Work Environment:
- Work is performed primarily at the Catawba County Museum of History, but will include
participation
in other CCHA special events at various other CCHA properties. Limited travel is required.
Essential Job Functions:
- Oversee registration of collections and archive donations, including inventory control.
- Attends job-related meetings as requested. Responsible for the preparation of memos and reports applicable to such meetings when needed.
- Help with all museum needs and projects when asked.
- Assists the Assistant Director in curatorial tasks related to new exhibits and the maintenance of collection records.
- Supervises volunteers supporting curatorial and interpretive activities for CCHA, providing guidance and support as necessary.
- Per request, research and write articles related to the CCHA collections.
- Assists with off-site CCHA activities and exhibits, as needed.
- Assists in site security and pest control procedures to ensure the safety of the museum environment and its collections.
- Ensures that all procedures are followed for museum operations and collections management.
- Handles public inquiries regarding donations or loans of objects and forwards them to the Assistant Director. Performs docent duties. Interacts professionally, courteously and warmly with the public, staff and all volunteer personnel.
- This position may require assisting with all aspects of CCHA work as needed.

Qualifications:
- An Associate's Degree or a Bachelor's Degree in History or Education or a related field preferred. Combined experience and education relating to this field of work may substitute for an undergraduate degree.
- Must have the ability to interpret historical collections/themes and to communicate that knowledge in a variety of written and oral formats.
- Must have ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with other employees, volunteers and the public through oral and written mediums, including supervising employees and volunteers.
- A demonstrated ability to be aware of basic preventative maintenance issues related to historic structures and be able to report any required maintenance to the Site Manager.
- Must be willing to learn how to use small power tools and equipment to support exhibit installation and maintenance.
- Must be willing to gain knowledge of the techniques of selection, evaluation, preservation, restoration, and exhibition of objects, photographs and ephemera.
- Must be willing to gain knowledge of maintaining site collection records and be able to prepare object condition reports.
Basic Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to work as a team member to organize, develop, plan, and produce projects.
- Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word.
- Must be detail oriented and have ability and desire to do repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to be on-call for emergencies.
- Must be able to work flexible hours.
Summary Minimum Education & Experience Required:
- Associates degree or Bachelor's in Museum Studies or American History, or Education preferred.
- Database management or inventory control experience prefered.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
Other Testing/ Licensing Required:
- A criminal background check is required.
- A drug test is required.
- A valid NC Drivers License is required.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
- Work is subject to inflexible deadlines and may require limited evening meetings.
- Primary work area is classified as standard office work with some exposure to outdoor environment.
- Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 60 pounds.
- Must be able to maneuver stairs without difficulty.
- Must be able to crawl and work in confined spaces and on ladders.
- Must have sufficient visual and hearing capabilities to respond to public needs and for detail work.
- Must have extensive communications skills.
