The Catawba County Museum of History will be honoring Black History Month with an exhibition on Central High School. Today abandoned buildings and a commemorative historic marker stands in recognition of the school's location along Hwy 16 in the East Newton community. The school was established as a one-room schoolhouse in 1899, and grew to a full high school by 1936. Central High School served black students in Newton and Catawba County until students were integrated into Newton-Conover High School in 1967. The exhibition will showcase images and a brief narrative of the school's history. Opening date TBA.
